Beyond Fireflies
In general, I tend to stay away from the more electronic styles of music, but that was before I was introduced to Owl City. Most people know them for the popular song “Fireflies,” which is a frequent play on my iPod, but I thought it was time to go a step further and hear the rest of the album. Ocean Eyes is a collection of lovely acoustic music and bubbly electronic riffs that produces these poppy, feel-good tracks that are crazy addictive.
Their music tends to be atmospheric, making you feel like you’re in a different place with each song. It can feel like flying through clouds or lying on your back drifting across the ocean. My favorite track of theirs at the moment is a song called “Vanilla Twilight,” which is so beautiful, not just for the music but also for the lyrics. Owl City generally has these perfect poetry lyrics that don’t always make sense to me, but in this song they capture the most beautiful sentiment that is easy to understand.
I’ll watch the night turn light blue/but it’s not the same without you/because it takes two to whisper quietly/the silence isn’t so bad/ till I look at my hands and feel sad/cuz’ the spaces between my fingers/are right where yours fit perfectly
I think this may open up a whole new genre for me. It’s very futuristic sounding, and I like what I’m hearing. Check out their music for free at OwlCityMusic.com.
